My September 11th.

I was inspired by my sister's crazy story of what she experienced on 9-11. It got me remembering what that day was like for me. Just like most of the kids my age at the time (9th grade) I was sitting in school, when my teacher turned on the tv and we saw the second plane hit the WTC.

At the time I had never even heard of the WTC, and I had no idea that this was a big attack. We didn't know how many people had made it out, so I thought it was just like everything else you see on the news. Once I saw people jumping from the highest buildings I realized this was something I would not be forgetting. It was a crazy time, and I will never forget President Hinckley's speech that night. My parents had just recently gotten divorced, and I had no stability. Luckily I turned on the tv just to watch the prophet's talk, which was extremely calming.

Derek and I got the opportunity to visit the World Trade Center Memorial Exhibit in New York this year. It was an amazing experience. To see all the missing persons signs, the video footage, hear the 911 calls.... it puts it all into an unbearable perspective.

The most touching part is the dedication of the firemen, policemen and volunteers that gave their lives. What an amazing day in our generation. In my memory, it is a vivid day because we all watched the country work together as a team.

Sushini.

(Side Note: I am writing this entry as I rub Aloe Vera all over my purple body. We went to Cowabunga Bay yesterday with no sunscreen (I'm in idiot, I can't help it.) And now I look like the smurf's red cousin. Needless to say I have spent the last 24 hours in PAIN.)

Let's begin this story with the fact that my mom is a fish-hater. She hates the smell of fish cooking and she hates eating it too.... as  a result, none of us kids ever tried fish growing up. The shocking result of this is that 5 out of 7 of us ended up loving fish. (we are still working on breaking the last two).

My brother Jaaf, my sister Krick, Derek and I decided that we all had a true passion for eating sushi, so we may as well start our own little club of sushi-lovers. After trying it out one night at Sushi Nigiri, we decided it was an utter success, and we would continue with the tradition. We came up with the name Sushini, and it's stuck. (Although, the group has only been around since July ;)

Well, last Saturday we decided we were all ready for another meeting. One of the rules of the club was that we would have to go somewhere different everytime. Our guest member Daniel, pitched the idea of a place called "Sushi Yah", so we headed over there. Once I read the sign "All you can eat sushi", I knew this was going to be a bad idea. However, we stuck it out, and although the rolls were relatively good, they definitely were nothing special.

The funnest part is that before every bite we each say, "Ichi, Ni, San!", and then throw it in our mouths. I had brought cupcakes, so Jaaf and Krick decided we should ichi, ni, san it and stuff them in whole. We went for it, and boy...No joke, my stomach is still suffering...

Our guests, Kelsy and Dano. Kelsy is still a sushi-hater, but a good sport.

Jaaf and Krick, at the ready with their cupcakes.

Sumo Baby Cake!

It was Desmond's first birthday party yesterday, so Mary(Derek's sister, Des's mom) asked us to make him a baby sumo wrestler cake since they were having a Sumo theme for the party.

Up till now I have only made typical shapes for wedding cakes, so it was the first time we were going to have to carve the cake. I thought it was going to be miserably difficult but we had SO much fun making it! This is by far my favorite cake we've made. Happy first year of life Dez!

The butt says "Des" in Japanese ;)

Birthday boy and the cake. Yay!
